Urbanization, Industrialization and pollution from motor vehicles have resulted in significant increase in respiratory diseases. For last two decades there are mushrooming of Respiratory & Cardiac centres both in the Government and Private sectors. Most of the Chest Diseases patients belongs to middle and lower socio-economic group and they are denied of proper treatment elsewhere.

Thoracic surgery unlike cardiac surgery has a higher incidence of morbidity and mortality and it afflicts mainly the poorer section of the society though off late no section of the society is spared.

This is a state referral centre for Pulmonary Medicine and Thoracic Surgery and all the Thoracic emergencies are managed in this institution. Cases are referred for thoracic surgery not only from the entire Karnataka State but also from the neighboring states.

For the comprehensive care of respiratory diseases and to make SDS TRC & Rajiv Gandhi Institution of Chest Diseases Bangalore as a Centre of Excellence in respiratory disorders, the Government of Karnataka has accorded autonomous status to this institute and it has been registered under Co-operative Society as SDS TUBERCULOSIS RESEARCH CENTRE AND RAJIV GANDHI INSTITUTE OF CHEST DISEASES vide No. SOR/BLU/DR/671/09-10 dated 23-09-2009.

Bengaluru happens to be the health hub and there are very few institutions in the country to provide exclusive respiratory care facilities and thoracic surgical work. By improving the institution it can attract patients from all over the country for comprehensive treatment of all chest diseases. The goal ultimately is to attain better health/wellness for populations at affordable cost, driven by quality and value and upgrade this institution to national and international level.
